In 1964, the singer/song-writer, Bob Dylan, wrote and recorded the song: "The Times They Are A-Changin'." That was a good observation then, and it still is, today. In fact, someone once accurately observed that the only constant thing in life is change. You don't believe it? Just think about it! Seasons change: relationships change; years change; our health changes; and of course, it seems as though the fabric of our whole life-style has changed since September 11th, 2001! Now, change can be very traumattic. Many, if not most, people have a difficult time dealing with thesetimes of great change. It seems as if we have nothing to cling to! And yet, change is inevitable. So, what do we do? Bruce MacDougall, in a wonderful little book, entitle REJOICE IN THE LORD(Abingdon Press, 1960), says that the way we can accept, and even embrace, change, is to remember the changelessness of God. Let me say that again: The way we can accept, yea, embrace change, is to remember the changelessness of God!!! Everything else might change, but God is absolutely constant. Let's examine this a bit. First, there's God's love for us. That hasn't changed; it's still as strong now as it was when John 316 was written. Ten, there's His grace; that hasn't changed. He still forgives us sinners, even though we don't deserve it, and can't do anything to merit it. His peace and comfort are still offered freely to us. In fact, just before receiving His body and blood, we say, "The peace of the Lord be with you Always." In fact, there are many references in our liturgy to God's peace! And, as for comfort, the Holy Spirit still in-dwells us today, our helper and comforter! And of course, God's promise of redemption and eternal life are constant. Yes, God is the same yesterday, today, and forever! So, how about all of this change! Is it inevitable? Yes. Scarey? Sometimes. But, bring it on!!! God is with us; nothing can separate us from the love of God through Jesus Christ: and, knowing that, we're ready for any changes that might come our way! :
